Chapter 8 – We Became Wild.

Recently, my little Kristen moved from the office location we have operated out of for almost 7 years. This new arrangement made me remember the old days, long for them, ache for the times we could lay in the grass wearing fresh muck and talk about what we had seen.

Kristen – my Little Kristen – this re-post is for you!

You don’t want a pic of where mine was!

Go ahead and laugh your ass off! That’s right – I said ass. Just spent most of my work week in Baker county Florida hacking through the most god-awful vine infested, nasty unburnt forest in the world….oh – and there’s ticks and chiggers in them thar woods.

So, after spending the day collecting thorn slices in my forearms, and picking seed ticks off my friends from DEP, we get back to hotel, I am excited to shower – and then – it happens…..the worst thing in my life….I find a tick – DOWN THERE!!!

Yeah – there! Well, right almost there – and it was embedded. I have never had a tick embed. I also hate ticks. I don’t give a shit who out there is fighting for tick rights or whatever – I hate the little buggers. I didn’t know what to do – I panicked.

I grabbed it and pulled it out – it was gross….I had to take another shower….then I treaded water in the pool for 30 minutes to see if more would climb up off of me….now I am freaked out that I might get Lyme disease. I have to monitor my bite DOWN THERE.

I just want to dispel some myths – tea tree oil is ineffective, as is most natural remedies – they sweated off very quickly as did 40% deet. you can duct tape all you want but it ruins your clothes, skin so soft works to some degree but is nasty dirty and must be reapplied, I will continue to test – need to test the lye soap thing for the chiggers because I am covered in them!

This is so NOT sexy!

Just a warm beginning to your Memorial Day weekend!! Cheers….

We want to hear what you think of this one!! Or, let us know what you are doing this season to keep the little creepers away!!

Gone…

The days grow longer and the green stuff starts to peek out once again. The birds raise their voices and the mayflies have already tickled my window.

There seems to be something on the wind. It isn’t going to be a normal summer here in central Florida. Something is missing. Something is GONE.

The lake shore is a bit longer and the streams I usually wade in are dry. The bogs are less boggy and the mud is now caked and dried to brick. The frogs aren’t croaking at night. The tadpoles aren’t in the mud puddles.

The rain is gone.

It seems that we have, once again, begun a serious drought spell. This doesn’t bode well for us. After just having a slight recovery year, we can’t imagine what peril will come from another long spell of drought weather.

Lake Okeechobee

No frogs to eat the bugs, no grass for the cattle, sinkholes will open as farmers rush to save the paltry crops as they wither in the Florida sun, and the precious water that we fight for everyday will continue to be pumped and shipped!! Thanks Rick Scott!

This year should be very interesting – by interesting I mean volatile. Watch out Chicks – a storm approaches!!

Appreciation.

Appreciation..

Thanks!

Chicks Can…!

That’s right! Chicks can…! In an effort to motivate you all to get up off your butts and get out there, I am currently working on a summer campaign that will make it hard for you to make excuses!

Chicks can…! Will be a series of articles that relate the exciting things Chicks can do! I want to hear what you CAN do!!

We will follow each article up with lists of resources in different parts of the country and world that will help YOU do the same thing! We want to take away all your excuses for sitting on your arse. We want to challenge YOU to do something adventurous, beautiful, and challenging.

So, keep eating those chips remarking about how you could never be that brave or how you could never do what she did – because honey – You are a Chick – and Chicks can…!

My son has been hospitalized for over a week so we missed the moon last night – BUT I didn’t miss this. Enjoy!!

Girl On The Wheel

I spent a night camping in the Coves to see how sleeping in the Hennessy Hammock would be – extremely comfortable. Through the bug netting, I had a perfect view of the perigee moon all night – the moon was at its closest point to the earth, appearing larger and brighter than normal. The Deep Dark Woods’ song ‘By The Light of the Moon’ filtered through my head all night.

City noises – trains and drunks mainly – were uncomfortably close despite the apparent seclusion of the Coves. Bird songs in the morning made up for it 🙂
