As you probably know by now, Chicks with Ticks work in some pretty remote locations, which means that we spend ALOT of time driving around. We’ve found that a great way to kill time when stuck in the truck (hopefully not this kind of stuck) is to sing our hearts out! It took a few weeks of working together before Jacque and I felt comfortable singing in front of eachother, but I remember the first time it happened — we were driving down some podunk highway 5ish years ago after an exhausting day in the field, and Fergie’s “I Hope You Know” came on. As the song reached the chorus, Jacque just belted out with the most beautiful voice. I know she gets embarassed, but she is an amazing singer! I’m not by any stretch of the imagination, but I sing along anyways (though Jacque usually turns the volume up – coincidence?). Singing your heart out is a great way to 1) release stress after a long day, 2) pump yourself up in the morning, or 3) not have to talk to your traveling companion.. because let’s be honest, sometimes you just plain run out of stuff to talk about (unless you are Jacque).
So what’s on the CWT’s playlist these days? WARNING: DO NOT JUDGE. Our genres of choice tend to be country (very fitting for driving through the middle of nowhere) and pop since they are the best for singing along to. We listen to a wide variety of artists from Carrie Underwood to Beyonce, from Michael Jackson to Rascall Flatts, from Lady Antebellum to Madonna. And sadly we’ve even been known to subject some of our clients to our musical preferences (sorry about the Lady Gaga, Gene) or to sing our own crazy made-up songs in the woods (no one can hear us, right?)!
So we want to know – Do you sing in your car or, even better, in the woods? Share your favorite songs with us! Here are some of ours:
My favorite post ever – in fact – maybe I have been in a funk BECAUSE I AM NOT SINGING IN THE TRUCK!! Love you so much Kristen – this post is amazingly PERFECT!!

I sing in the car, the shower, at home. I will sing out and sound as though I am killing someone. A few of my favorite albums are feel like a woman by Shania Twain, Usher’s Confessions, Michael Jackson’s thriller, Canton Jones and Vickie Yohe, both gospel singers. Thanks for reminding me it’s okay not to be so serious all the time.

my first job in Italy was working as a chef in a vacation house and my sister took a summer break from college to help me. Our favorite song to sing out was American Pie – (NOT the Madonna version) we would turn the music all the way up (close the windows and doors in the kitchen) and sing it over and over and over again… great memories

OMG. Singing as if no one is listening is balm for my lonely soul. Right now I’m belting’em out in the car with Tom Petty. Tomorrow I might be directing the London Symphony when I stop at intersections. Music–the universal language, the universal mood enhancer. When I’m home I sing AND dance. 🙂

I suspect you can guess this hick spends a few hours a day on the road, these above songs have been some of my favs, but to tell you the truth I like to create and sing my own as a melody arises and then I tinker with words for time. The road can be creative place to be.

Is it your clueless employer that’s making you wear hardhats in the great wide open? That makes me laugh. When I’ve had that pushed on me in the past, I said show me the overhead hazard and I’ll put it on. Being in a forest, unless it’s one that’s been devastated by mountain pine beetle, doesn’t count as an overhead hazard. Ditch the hardhats!

MSHA MSHA MSHA….and we agree about being in the wide open wearing hard hats – especially in 100 degree weather!! It’s all part of the job some days – hard hats, life vests (even in 1″ water), steel toes, goggles, gloves, and you would think they would know what a RISK THAT STUFF IS!!!

I love singing my heart out! What a mood lifter sometimes. I’ve been singing a lot lately in the car and in the shower, while I’m doing the dishes. Two keeps asking me to stop. Everybody else just tunes me out I think. Mainly I sing show tunes because that’s what I grew up on. I sing the soundtrack from “For the Boys”. a lot of Harry Connick Jr and Michael Buble. Sometimes The Mammas and the Papas.
I liked that Fergie song. I don’t get Lady Ga Ga.

Hi there! Followed back here from LinkedIn. I’m a field person too! Actually for longer than I care to admit to. I also do a lot of windshield time in my rounds of supporting a river basin.
As I don’t sing myself, the next best thing is the MP3 player. Old Dave never leaves the shop without it. The camera is the next “must take” item.
Best, Dave
